Destination: Home > Calendar > Vanderburgh Homeless Connect
Hospitality from the whole community, with consumers as welcomed guests,
Immediacy—same-day results for consumers (not simply referrals or information),
Community—voluntary civic participation,
Partnership across agencies and sectors of the community, and
Excellence through rigorous evaluation and improvement. |
Linked with Destination: Home
Vanderburgh Homeless Connect is a key to strategies in Destination: Home, the ten-year plan to end homelessness in Evansville and Vanderburgh County. Destination: Home aims for a goal to “maximize resources and access to services through coordination of existing services and providers.” This event helps carry out the strategy: “Develop improved access to information about sources of assistance.”
Volunteers will be needed to serve at Vanderburgh Homeless Connect and will be engaged in various roles to make the event a success. Training will be provided to those who invest their time in welcoming, assisting, and serving the event Guests. Volunteers serve entire day (with some exceptions as needed). Volunteers are also engaged in the planning stages before the event.
Vendors - Service Providers
The menu of services available will be as rich as the kinds of service providers who are willing and able to be present and offer some form of immediate service—processing an application, administering a health screening, preparing tax returns, creating a photo ID, assisting with a job search, making appointments, and more!
(This is not an "information fair." Vendors are challenged to do as much of the kinds of services they do in their own offices at this event.)
Areas of service may include …
Employment/Education – Job search, resumes; Career advancement; Senior employment services; Vocational Rehabilitation; Basic literacy, GED, ABE, ESL; Transition Resources for agricultural workers, Ivy Tech Community College, and others
Health – Health screenings/tests: blood sugar, blood pressure, HIV, Hepatitis C; Hearing; Vision; Dental; Foot care; Mental health; Lung health; Smoking cessation; Substance abuse services, Access To Recovery (ATR), balance & fall prevention, exercises for addressing pain, Nutrition on a budget, and Others
Government Assistance – TANF, Food stamps, Medicaid, HIP, Hoosier Healthwise; BMV (photo ID’s); Social Security Admin.; birth certificate assistance; Veterans Services (Veterans Admin. VA Clinic, VET Center, Veterans Employment Training, Supplies, etc.); and Others
Legal – civil & criminal attorneys consultation (like “Talk to a Lawyer” live)
Financial – Banking (“Bank on Evansville” +); Tax preparation; Foreclosure mitigation; Financial assistance
Housing – Private landlords; Evansville Housing Authority; Permanent Supportive Housing (Shelter Plus Care, New Start); Transitional housing; Utility bill consultation, Credit checks/counseling; Criminal history checks; notary public; Others
Various Others (agencies not listed above or not fitting into a section above) including special areas for Parent Resources, Support Groups, Prison Aftercare Services, Relationships (marriage, domestic violence), Information & Referral, etc. |
