Background of Sister Joanna's House of Bread and Peace

Opened by Benedictine nun, Sister Joanna Trainer, in 1985, the House of Bread and Peace is a shelter for women and children.  The House provides a safe home to approximately 100 individuals each year, with one third of these children.

While at the House of Bread and Peace, residents have an opportunity to work on their individual problems and build stable foundations for their move into independent housing.

Residents of the House are provided with a room, food, personal care items, connections to other community resources, and case management.

Women are not charged a fee to live at the House, but are responsible for daily chores, cooking, and working on their personal goals.  Many women stay an average of three to five months, having time to heal the wounds of homelessness while in an atmosphere of love and support.
