Homeless Youth
Council
When Destination: Home was developed, it was
determined that homelessness among our youth required
further study before sound recommendations could be
formed for consideration of the city-county Commission
on Homelessness.
In an effort to bring together
representatives of youth-serving agencies to address the
prevalence of homelessness among our community's youth
(middle school and up), the Homeless Youth Council was
convened in January. Patty Avery and Cynthia Smith
serve as co-chairs.
Nearly 30 community members attended the first
meeting, hosted by Old National Bank. The group
discussed the definition of "homeless youth,"
experiences each has had in their respective services
with this population, and risk factors.
The Council has determined three areas of
focus:
 | Community Education (of youth & local
agencies)
 | Continuum of Services (coordinating existing,
assessing gaps)
 | Community Models (research other effective
models) | | |
The next meeting is set for Mon. April 9th at 12:00
noon, Old National Bank. Participants may bring lunch or purchase
lunch in the Bistro before joining the meeting in the
Blue and Gold Room.

Commission on
Homelessness
The joint city-county Commission on Homelessness
oversees the implementation of Destination
Home.
As 2007 unfolds, new members have
become part of this group: Troy Tornatta, County
Commissioner, serves as the chair. Ev Hansen-Davis
has been appointed by the Commissioners to the
Commission. Either Patty Avery or Cynthia Smith
attend as representatives of the Homeless Youth
Council.
The next meeting is set for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday,
March 8, 2007 at Mayor Weinzapfel's office.
