Reflections on Life
Today the average lifespan is 25,550 days. Life is composed of 24 hours in each of those days. When we are young, time seems to move so slowly. We are always looking to the future, and, at times, wishing our lives away. Yet, as we grow older, the days and years seem to fly by and we all too quickly look back and wonder where all the time has gone.
Life has been described as a mist, a fast runner, a breath, a wisp of smoke, a vapor. It is here today and can so quickly be gone ... leaving only shadows and memories of the life that once was.
Life has been described as a journey.
For some, we are very sure of where we are going, where we are at this point in time and exactly how to get to our destination. We are driven. For some, our journey has taken the scenic route. We stop to explore things along the way, or we try a new path that looks interesting. We often stop along the way to smell the roses. For some, we have gotten lost along the way and we don't have a clue where we are or where we are going. For some, our journey is long, but for others ... much too short.
Sometimes people stop us along the way and ask for directions, or they need help to make their journey. Sometimes we're too busy or don't want to be bothered. Yet, sometimes we reach out to help. At times, we actually realize that we have received much more than we have given. Sometimes we come to a crossroad and have to make decisions that will affect the rest of our life. Sometimes those choices are good and sometimes they could be better. Sometimes we too have to stop and ask for directions or assistance to keep to the path. Sometimes we have to slow down and become a "slow moving vehicle" because of illness, divorce, or other crisis. Sometimes, even, we travel by ourselves and sometimes we have company.
But everyone has a life story ... And every story is unique ... Each life we remember in the annual Homeless Memorial Service was unique ... Some may have crossed our paths and others we never knew, but they all had a life story. They all had value They all had purpose. ... that is what we remember in this memorial.
