HOMEWARD BOUND

- Southwest Indiana -

Saturday, April 27, 2007 - Garvin Park

Homeward Bound - Southwest Indiana was held on Saturday, April 28, 2007 at Garvin Park.  Last year's 5K walk to provide housing and fight homelessness raised over $14,000 through at least 200 participants.

Homeward Bound is a project among local homeless and affordable housing providers across the State of Indiana. Technical assistance is provided by the Indiana Coalition on Housing and Homeless Issues.

2007 Local Benefiting Agencies:

6 area agencies benefited from the 2007 Homeward Bound donations.  These agencies provide specific services that assist those who are homeless or who have recently been homeless...

Community Action Program of Evansville & Vanderburgh County (CAPE) -- for its emergency family shelter services

Since 1965, The Community Action Program of Evansville & Vanderburgh County, Inc. (CAPE) has been addressing the needs of Vanderburgh, Posey, and Gibson Counties with a wide variety of programs such as Head Start/Early Head Start, the state Utility Assistance Program, Weatherization, Learning Center activities, the Foster Grandparent Program, and housing counseling/down payment assistance, serving over 21,000 customers on an annual basis.  In the early 90’s, CAPE was one of the first organizations to open a homeless shelter in Evansville available to families, allowing the family unit to remain together while being assisted in seeking permanent, affordable housing.  CAPE also operates the only homeless shelter in Gibson County.  The agency also receives funding through the City of Evansville and the State of Indiana for rental assistance to individuals and families to prevent homelessness.

bullet

ECHO Community Health Care, Inc. -- for health-related/social work case management and prescription assistance

The mission of ECHO Community Health Care, Inc. (ECHC) is to provide Affordable, Accessible, and Appropriate primary health care to all individuals, including the uninsured, under-insured, and homeless. Care is provided by dedicated professionals and volunteers in an environment that promotes the client's self esteem and human worth, and reinforces self-care management and positive lifestyle choices.  Comprehensive primary health care and social services are provided at three clinic sites in Evansville. Sliding fee payment is available based on household income.  No one is denied services based on the ability to pay.  Medical outreach and homeless health services are provided daily and include minor acute care, counseling, screening, and assessment. These services are provided free of charge to anyone needing care at the area homeless shelters, soup kitchens, schools, and social service agencies.

bullet

ECHO Housing Corporation -- for Lucas Place (a family transitional housing project) operating expenses as well as a financial literacy program and playground equipment improvements.

ECHO Housing Corporation (EHC) was created by the Evansville Coalition for the Homeless to focus on the development of transitional housing for homeless families and affordable housing for low-income families. EHC currently operates Lucas Place, a 20 apartment unit transitional housing facility and manages 30 units of affordable rental properties. EHC is now also creating homeownership opportunities with a single-family new construction project.

bullet

Outreach Ministries -- for financial assistance for individuals who are homeless establishing a home or to prevent eviction.

Outreach Ministries has been providing crisis intervention services for low-income individuals and families in Vanderburgh, Posey and Warrick counties since 1968. Following its mission to prevent hunger and homelessness in our community, Outreach Ministries provides comprehensive emergency assistance such as referrals to local food pantries, financial assistance for rent and mortgage payments, utility assistance, and medical assistance and other needs as indicated by the crisis. Referrals for other services in the community and up-to-date information about programs and other issues the individual may be dealing with each day are provided as is needed.

bullet

Tri-State Food Bank, Inc. -- for food assistance for individuals who are homeless or who are establishing their home after being homeless.

Tri-State Food Bank  has helped feed the homeless, children, elderly and low-income families in the tri-state area for more than 20 years. Through donations and a supportive community, the Food Bank distributed over 4.6 million pounds of grocery products last year through their network of 258 feeding agencies.  Every dollar donated to the Food Bank generated $12.00 in food to the needy.  Hunger hurts.  Tri-State Food Bank is honored to be part of the solution to the many needs the homeless in our community face each day.

This year's state honorary chair for the walk was Lt. Governor Becky Skillman

bullet

Teresa Burkes, local spokesperson, was presented the Distinguished Hoosier Award at the start of this year's event.

When asked "Why will you walk?" Teresa responded: "I will walk for homelessness because I know that anyone could be put in this position. I worked hard all my life and played by the rules, I never thought my circumstances would me lead me in this direction. The state of homelessness does not discriminate, it can happen to anyone. I know because it happened to me.  Walking for Homeward Bound gives me the opportunity to give back to the agencies that helped me move towards permanent housing."

Special thanks to
