On any given night, nearly 400 individuals

are temporarily sheltered in our emergency homeless shelters

and transitional housing programs.

Over a third of them are children, under the age of 18.

At least 10-11% are veterans who are homeless

(download new report: Vital Mission or snapshot)

60 families on the average are homeless daily

At least another 30-40 are living in places not meant for human habitation,

e.g. vehicles, tents, under bridges, in parks or abandon buildings.

Countless others find temporary and expensive shelter in "cheap" motels

or "doubled up" with friends and family.

At least 4,500 families are at risk of becoming homeless.

Existing resources are stretched, and in spite of the fact that

our community has 18 specialized programs and

invests over $6 million a year in homeless services,

the number of homeless on our streets and in our shelters continues to grow.

As the result of a two-year collaborative effort involving over 200 individuals,

Destination: Home--a Ten-Year Journey to End Homelessness in Evansville and Vanderburgh County

establishes the parameters for ending homelessness in our community

by addressing both the root causes and the effects of homelessness.

Like over 325 communities, counties, and states across the nation,

we have sought to identify core issues and develop strategies to address them.
